Improv Training Warm Up Game: Imaginary Balls Comedy

Patrick, Laurice, Noel and Walter teach a popular warm-up game with our students at the Comedy Hall of Fame Foundation, Laugh It Out program. More at http://www.lmao-nyc.com/lmao We like to use Imaginary Balls in our classes for team building and pantomime training. http://www.comedyhalloffame.com/foundation

HOW TO PLAY
The circle leader, in this case Patrick Reidy, starts by creating an imaginary ball. The ball has a specific color, size and weight. Patrick uses Pantomime to endow the shape and weight, before calling out the color and passing it around the circle. The team's job is to maintain the size and weight and communicate with other teammates. Make eye contact with someone in the circle. Call out the color of the ball and pass it saying "Orange Ball". When catching the ball, mimic the weight and size as you say "THANK YOU, Orange Ball". Once the first ball is established, the leader will create another ball. Remember don't pass the ball without making eye contact. Communication is a two way street. The sender and the receiver both have to be prepared. Speed is not the goal in this game. Instead, go for focus and accuracy. If you can master pantomime through these types of games, you will be ten times the performer -- whether you are improvising OR acting, singing or dancing in a prepared piece. A skilled physical performer can take on any situation.

Filmed between shows at Farquhar Middle School in Olney Md. Special thanks to Betsy Sirk for bringing us in so many times in the past few years to Farquhar MS and Cloverly Elementary School (Silver Spring / Briggs Chaney MD).

Eight Is Never Enough (www.eightimprov.biz), interactive Improv comedy show in the heart of NYC's theater district, is adding performances of its popular program, Improv 4 Kids, for the 2012 Spring Break Season. The show normally runs at the Broadway Comedy Club (318 West 53rd Street, New York, NY 10019) every Saturday at 3pm. For those travelling to (or staying home in) New York City this spring, bring the whole family to performances on March 31, April 1, 4, 7, 11, 14 and 15 at 3pm. Tickets for just $20-35 are available via Ovationtix (https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/718535/, 866-811-4111).

What is this show about? Well that is totally up to you. You and your family provide suggestions and inspiration for skits and songs created totally on the spot. Many of the scenes involve your children on stage making funny sounds, helping the actors play a human Mad Libs, and created historical human slide show. Add in a few sing-a-longs and the whole audience feels a part of the action. The cast, all professional stage and screen actors and comics, takes on today's hottest topics and your biggest likes and dislikes. Recent audiences have inspired and joyed scenes and songs about Lost in New York, Bad Musicals on Broadway, Justin Beiber, Republican Primary, Superbowl, Awards Shows and more.

Eight Is Never Enough played its first shows at New York cabaret theaters back in 2002. Since 2004, the show has played top New York Comedy Clubs and even off Broadway (2009-2011 LMAO Off Broadway). Beyond its public schedule of shows and workshops at the Broadway Comedy Club, the cast hosts field trips and private corporate team building shows in Times Square. The touring company travels nationwide to theaters, clubs, colleges, K-12 schools and private events. Improv 4 Kids presents over 300 shows and workshops for K-12 audiences every year. Through the Comedy Hall Of Fame and other organizations, Eight Is Never Enough presents residencies and even DOE credited classes at local high schools.
